Round table "Promising directions of development of agricultural science in the world and vegetable growing in particular" (06.02.2023)

On February 6, 2023, a round table was held at the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the National Academy of Sciences on the topic: "Promising directions for the development of agricultural science in the world and vegetable growing in particular." Tetyana Ivchenko, head of the laboratory of genetics, genetic resources and biotechnology, doctor of agricultural sciences, professor, gave a speech at the seminar.

In her report, she analyzed the ways to improve the key elements of vegetable production technologies in a controlled environment and open ground due to the introduction of new High-Tech solutions. Such scientific research should include: renewable energy sources, vertical farms, elements of production technology in a controlled environment, LED lighting, mechanisms of transmission of viral plant diseases, treatment of plants with pesticides, etc.

In addition to leading scientists of the institute, representatives of the State Biotechnological University, the Institute of Climate-Oriented Agriculture of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Dnipropetrovsk Agrarian University, and the Dnipropetrovsk DS IOB of the National Academy of Sciences took part in the work of the round table. 21 people took part in the discussion.

An active discussion took place, during which proposals were made regarding the diversification of scientific directions of research for the future, taking into account related fields and today's challenges. Thus, for the reconstruction of the city of Kharkiv and other cities and towns in the post-war period, it will be urgent to work to combine the fields of construction and vegetable growing, in particular in the direction of creating "city farms", a network of cafes, restaurants, food IT sites, recreation areas with free access to wi-fi with the cultivation of fresh green crops and vegetable products as part of the "vertical gardens" programs. The issue of participation of the Institute's scientists in the Horizon Europe - Work Program 2023-2024 "Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment" program was also discussed.

These scientific projects will make it possible to attract additional investments to communities and make a technological breakthrough in the direction of the possibilities of growing greens and vegetables, as well as achieve colossal savings in logistics, resources and efficient use of urban space with the wide application of hydro-, aero-, bio- and agroponics.
