Conducting Scientific Experiments

On July 24, 2026, in accordance with the 2026 schedule for the evaluation of research experiments at the experimental stations of the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the NAAS, the evaluation of research experiments under Research Program 23, «Vegetable and Melon Growing,» took place.

The commission consists of: the commission chair Director of the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the NAAS, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor O.I. Alforov; and commission members Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the NAAS, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Senior Research Scientist O.V. Serhiienko, Scientific Secretary of the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the NAAS, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Senior Researcher O.M. Shabetia; and representatives of the Dnipropetrovsk Experimental Station of the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the NAAS Acting Director, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor V.F. Zavertalіuk; Senior Researcher, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences V.O. Bohdanov; Senior Researcher, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences O.V. Zavertalіuk; and Senior Researcher O.V. Palinchak, pursuant to Order No. 29 dated May 27, 2026, conducted the acceptance of scientific research on three second-level tasks: 23.00.01.07.F, 23.00.01.08.F, 23.00.01.09. F.

23.00.01.07.F «Development of high-quality, versatile, single-serving pumpkin varieties using genetic sources of valuable traits.»

2026 Phase – «To investigate the genotypic variability of the gene pool of various species of table pumpkin in terms of productivity and biochemical composition.»

Breeding work is conducted in open fields covering an area of 0.9 hectares, including the propagation of lines in isolated plots (0.15 hectares), in the following nurseries: foundation material (109 samples), self-pollinated lines (36), hybridization (20), breeding (48), and preliminary propagation (5). The experimental plots are in satisfactory condition. Observations and surveys were carried out in accordance with the work program, and self-pollination and crossing were conducted in accordance with the work plan.

23.00.01.08.F «Development of a High-Yielding Heterosis Melon Hybrid Based on Early-Maturing, Stress-Tolerant Lines.»

2026 Phase – «To determine the parameters of genetic variability in the melon gene pool based on combinations of breeding traits under the influence of environmental factors.»

Breeding work is conducted in open fields covering an area of 0.50 hectares, including the propagation of lines in isolated plots (0.11 hectares), in the following nurseries: original forms (50 samples), parental lines (58), hybridization (24), and preliminary propagation (5). The experimental plots are in satisfactory condition. Observations and surveys were carried out in accordance with the work program, and self-pollination and cross-pollination were conducted as per the work plan.

23.00.01.09.F «Development of a heterozygous watermelon hybrid of the early maturity group using lines with high adaptive potential.»

Phase 2026 – «Identify valuable sources of watermelon genetic diversity based on a set of indicators and use them to create inbred lines of various generations.»

Breeding work is conducted in open fields covering an area of 0.56 hectares, including the propagation of lines in isolated plots (0.12 hectares), in the following nurseries: foundation forms (96 samples), parental lines (40), hybridization (24), and preliminary propagation (5). The experimental plots are in satisfactory condition. Observations and surveys were carried out in accordance with the work program, and self-pollination and cross-pollination were conducted as per the work plan.

The audit found that the experiments for each task were set up in full in accordance with the thematic plan, technical specifications, and work program for 2026.

During the approval of the experiments, issues regarding the methodology for designing and conducting research on the breeding and cultivation of vegetable and melon crops were discussed. The experiments were designed in accordance with the methodology for research in vegetable and melon cultivation and the relevant methodological recommendations for conducting breeding work with melon crops.

The necessary primary documentation is available. Field journals have been properly completed, and all observations, records, and evaluations are being carried out in full accordance with the work programs. It is recommended that the experiments be accepted and the research continued.
