Institute of Vegetable and Melon growing NAAS

Conducting scientific experiments

On 18 June 2026, in accordance with the schedule for the assessment of research projects at the scientific departments of the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine for 2026, the assessment of research projects under Research Programme 20 «Vegetable and Melon Growing» took place, in accordance with the following task:

  • 23.00.01.05.F Development of the productive and adaptive potential of cucurbit crops and the creation of heterotic watermelon and cucumber hybrids.

Phase 2026: Breeding and genetic monitoring of the breeding stock of cucurbit crops and selection of parental components for hybrids.

Laboratory for the Breeding of Solanaceous and Cucurbit Crops. Research under protected ground conditions.

The researcher, Larуsa Oleksandrivna Radchenko, presented the experiments and provided information on their compliance with the work programme. The research is being carried out in accordance with the technical specifications and the timetable. Information was presented on new hybrid combinations of cucumber which, unlike the standard varieties, combine a range of valuable breeding traits with resistance to environmental stressors (7–9 points). Plans are in place to create a database of breeding and genetic indicators for cucumber breeding material. Cross-breeding is being carried out to produce F1 heterozygous cucumber hybrids and new parental lines that are tolerant to environmental stress factors (high temperatures and diseases). The work is being carried out in all nurseries: the hybridisation nursery; the collection nursery; the line testing nursery; and the hybrid variety testing nursery.

Laboratory of Adaptive Vegetable Cultivation, Storage and Standardisation.

  • 23.00.02.02 P Determination of early potato yield potential using biological cultivation methods.

Phase 2026 Determination of potato variety potential in early yield formation.

The project leader, Oleksii Volodymyrovych Melnyk, presented the experiments and provided information on their compliance with the work programme. The research is being carried out in accordance with the technical specifications and the schedule. Experiments were presented on determining the varietal potential of potatoes in early crop formation; based on the results, a database will be created on the productivity of regionalised potato varieties in early crop formation, which will ensure resource savings of 10–15 per cent.

The Experiment Acceptance Committee, comprising: the Deputy Director for Research, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Senior Research Fellow O.V. Serhiienko; Head of the Vegetable and Melon Breeding Department, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Senior Research Fellow S.I. Kondratenko; Head of the Laboratory of Genetics, Genetic Resources and Biotechnology, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor T.V. Ivchenko; Scientific Secretary, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Senior Research Fellow O.M. Shabetia; and Head of the Laboratory of Innovative and Investment Development of the Vegetable Market and Intellectual Property, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Senior Research Fellow L.A. Terokhina, assessed the condition of the crops and compliance with research methodologies. During a lively discussion, a range of issues was identified, along with ways to resolve them.

The commission’s conclusion: the experiments are approved.
