Conducting Experiments
On August 6, 2026, in accordance with the 2026 schedule for the review of research projects at the scientific departments of the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the NАAS, a review of research projects under Research Program 23, «Vegetable and Melon Growing,» took place in accordance with the following task:
Research conducted in unheated glass greenhouses.
23.00.01.01 F Interspecific and intraspecific hybridization of Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae plant species to create competitive breeding innovations.
Phase 2026: Conduct interspecific hybridization within the genera Capsicum L. and Cucurbita L. Create F1 intermediate hybrids of sweet peppers. Conduct diallel crosses of multigenomic lines with high-yielding tomato varieties. Isolate multi-marker mutant forms of tomato from the M6 generation for transfer to the plant gene bank.

Project Leader S.I. Kondratenko presented the experiments and provided information on their alignment with the work program. The research is being conducted in accordance with the technical specifications and the schedule. Information was presented on the creation of multi-marker mutant tomato varieties, which are distinguished by a 30–50% increase in fruit weight and yield compared to the original varieties. Research is being conducted in the nursery for these mutant varieties.
The project leader, L.V. Pylypenko, presented the experiments and provided information on their alignment with the work program. The research is being conducted in accordance with the technical specifications and the schedule. Information was presented on tester and diallel crosses of polygenic sweet pepper lines with high-yielding varieties. Work is also underway on sweet pepper breeding following the full breeding process. This work is being carried out in nurseries for: foundation material (collection lines, F2–4 and F5–6 hybrids); propagation; hybridization; and F1 hybrids.
23.00.01.03.F Study of the genetic organization of eggplant fruit quality traits to develop hybrids suitable for the production of dehydrated products.
Phase 2026: Monitoring of eggplant collection and breeding material for quantitative and qualitative traits.
Project Leader R.V. Krutko presented the experiments and provided information on their alignment with the work program. The research is being conducted in accordance with the technical specifications and the schedule. Information was presented on the systematization of data regarding the morphological, biochemical, and technological characteristics of eggplant samples, which will facilitate the rapid search for and analysis of promising breeding material; and will improve the accuracy of genotype selection for breeding dehydrated products, thereby establishing a database of eggplant samples based on quantitative and qualitative traits.
23.00.01.04.F Development of a hybridization methodology for vegetable plants of the families Solanaceae Juss. and Cucurbitaceae Juss. to create highly adaptive hybrids.
Phase 2026: Monitoring of collection and breeding material of nightshade and gourd crops for traits related to flower morphology and development.

Task Leader R.V. Krutko presented the experiments and provided information regarding their compliance with the work program. The research is being conducted in accordance with the technical specifications and the schedule. Information was presented on the morphological characteristics of flowers, their pollination capacity, fruit set, and seed formation in different genotypes under various growing conditions, with the aim of creating a database of Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae crop samples based on flower characteristics and seed productivity.
25.01.01.11 F Establishment of collections of genetic resources for vegetable and melon crops.
Phase 2026: Evaluate the introduced samples and identify those of value for inclusion in the gene pool.

Task Executor: I.M. Mуtenko presented the experiments and provided information regarding their compliance with the work program. The research is being conducted in accordance with the technical specifications and the schedule. Collections and samples from the gene pool were presented for the following crops: tomato, sweet pepper, and pumpkin.

Chaіuk, assessed the condition of the crops and compliance with the research methodology.
The commission’s conclusion: the experiments are accepted.
