FIELD DAY: «BREEDING INNOVATIONS IN VEGETABLE AND MELON GROWING»

Dear Colleagues!

On August 14, 2026, the Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences hosted a field day titled «Breeding Innovations in Vegetable and Melon Growing.»

One of the state’s key socioeconomic objectives is to provide the population with a wide variety of vegetables and melons in accordance with scientifically based consumption guidelines.

The Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine is the leading scientific institution in Ukraine in its field. Its activities are aimed at improving scientific support for vegetable cultivation, increasing production efficiency, and providing methodological guidance and coordinating joint efforts to develop a unified scientific and technical policy for the sector.

In recent years, researchers at the Institute have developed a number of competitive varieties and hybrids of vegetable and melon crops. These are characterized by high economic value, quality characteristics, and ease of cultivation, and are well adapted to the soil and climate conditions of Ukraine. The modern technologies implemented for growing commercial crops and seed production contribute to stable and high yields.

Currently, 136 varieties and hybrids developed by the Institute, its research stations, and the institutions it coordinates have been entered into the State Register of Plant Varieties Suitable for Distribution in Ukraine. A significant portion of these developments are already well known to farmers due to their high adaptability, productivity, yield, and excellent quality characteristics.

At the Field Day (online), researchers presented their innovative achievements in the areas and results of breeding work, the characteristics and advantages of new varieties, and modern cultivation technologies at demonstration and research fields.
